Third molars are commonly referred to as Wisdom teeth. They are types of molars found in the very back of your mouth behind your second molars. Typically, they are the last teeth to develop and do so between the middle teenage years and early twenties. Your wisdom teeth may become impacted or fail to erupt due to a lack of space in the jaw or the angle at which they come in. Sometimes, the angle at which they erupt will impinge on the adjacent teeth. If your wisdom teeth erupt impacted or impinge on other teeth, this is an indicator that they will likely become a problem in adulthood. After looking at your panoramic X-ray and consulting with you, we will explain the pros and cons of keeping your wisdom teeth and or recommend they be removed.
WHAT IS AN IMPACTED TOOTH?
When a lack of space prevents the wisdom teeth from erupting they are called impacted. If they are not removed, you may develop gum tenderness, swelling, or even severe pain. Impacted wisdom teeth that are partially or fully erupted can be quite difficult to clean and are much more susceptible to tooth decay, recurring infections, gum disease, and problems in adjacent teeth. Although some people develop wisdom teeth and never need them removed, more than not, our jaws are too small to accommodate them. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning. Each patient’s situation is unique.
CONSULTATIONS
Dr. Engel offers complimentary consultations on wisdom teeth extractions. However, we will need a current panoramic X-ray to determine whether your wisdom teeth will need to be removed. A panoramic X-ray can be taken at our office or we can obtain one from another office if you know you have a current one somewhere else. If we recommend removal, it is best to have them removed soon rather than later. There is a greater chance that the roots have not fully formed and the bone surrounding the teeth is less dense, making the procedure less complicated as well as making the recovery time shorter.
During your consultation, Dr Engel will go over in as much detail as you would like to hear, the process of the surgery itself. Oral sedation is recommended and very safe. We use a pill called Halcion for oral sedation. For more information on Halcion please click the link provided.
DAY OF SURGERY
You will need a ride to and from our office the day of your surgery as well as someone that can stay with you at least 4 hours after your surgery. Expect to sleep and lay low the remainder of the day after your procedure.
Once you arrive in our office, you will be escorted to an operatory where Dr. Engel and his assistant will greet you and get you comfortable in preparation of your surgery.
Once the surgery is complete, the healing process begins. The healing process varies depending on the degree of difficulty related to the extraction. Dr. Engel and his assistant will let you know what you can expect and will provide instructions, pain medication (if needed), and extra gauze for a comfortable, efficient healing process.
We suggest that you stock up on soft foods such as Broth, soup, and yogurt in preparation for your procedure. Making arrangements for child care, work, school, etc. is also helpful so you can rest and heal.
